What Are Cognitive Disorders?
Cognitive communication disorders are acquired difficulties with mental processes such as memory, problem solving/reasoning, and executive functions (attention, planning, organizing). Cognitive impairments in adults are commonly related to dementia, stroke, head injuries, or chemo/radiation.
Therapy can include cognitive rehabilitation and/or training in the use of compensatory strategies. Signs of a cognitive disorder include having difficulty remembering conversations, impaired ability to perform daily tasks (e.g. managing medications, paying bills), and difficulty focusing.
