What is Accent Modification?

An accent is not a speech or language disorder however a strong accent can make communication more difficult for some people.  

 

Accent modification is an elective service for people who may feel that they have to repeat themselves frequently, that the way they speak impacts the way that they are understood by others, or get frustrated that people seem to focus more on their accent than on what they are saying. These problems can make work, school, or other activities more difficult.

Accent modification training focuses on intelligibility, naturalness, fluency, pragmatics, and voice. It can also include focus on adjusting grammar and understanding vocabulary and expressions specific to each client.
